Why Earth Day Matters
Earth Day began in 1970, sparked by a growing awareness of environmental issues and the need to create lasting change. Over five decades later, it has grown into a global movement that mobilizes over a billion people each year. Earth Day calls on us to:
Reflect on our individual and collective impact on the environment
Act through sustainable choices, from reducing waste to conserving energy
Advocate for policies and innovation that protect natural ecosystems
Here in DeKalb, Earth Day isn’t just one day—it’s a mindset that we strive to carry throughout the year. From community clean-ups and local farmers markets to eco-conscious businesses and green development projects, DeKalb is home to everyday sustainability heroes working toward a better future.
