Where Dinosaurs Roamed, the Future Begins: Fernbank’s Next Chapter

A beloved chapter in DeKalb’s story is coming to a close, making way for something extraordinary.

On April 26, Fernbank Museum of Natural History will close its iconic exhibit, A Walk Through Time in Georgia, as part of a bold, multi-year transformation set to redefine the museum experience.

For generations of Atlantans, this exhibit has been a first encounter with towering, life-size dinosaurs and a gateway into Georgia’s natural history. Now, Fernbank is stepping into the future with a $27+ million investment that will bring new energy, innovation, and discovery to every corner of the campus.

What’s Ahead

Fernbank’s transformation will introduce a series of new and reimagined experiences designed to connect science, nature, and human culture in immersive and meaningful ways.

Changing Earth (Opening 2027)

A signature exhibit exploring the dynamic systems of our planet, including land, water, air, and life. Interactive features like the “Tectonic Dashboard” and the immersive Rollins Rotunda will bring Earth’s story to life.

Orkin Discovery Zone (Opening 2026)

A hands-on science hub where guests can step into the role of a scientist, exploring biodiversity, observing live animals, and engaging with interactive learning experiences.

A More Connected Experience

Fernbank’s vision goes beyond new exhibits. The museum is reimagining how guests move through and experience the space, creating seamless connections between indoor galleries, the 3D giant screen theater, and the outdoor WildWoods and Fernbank Forest.

Enhancements will also improve accessibility across the campus, including new elevators, additional automatic doors, and expanded connectivity between exhibits and outdoor spaces.
