December Guide To DeKalb
One thing we can all agree on this year is that we can’t wait for it to be over. While it’s a unanimous sentiment that we’re all ready to flip the calendar over to 2021, there’s still a lot of magic happening in DeKalb and plenty of memories that are waiting to be made this December.
We’ve rounded up a few recommendations for you to enjoy this month.
Families With Kids
There’s a reason why this event is considered by locals to be the most heartwarming holiday celebration. Stone Mountain Park’s Christmas is a jam-packed event that includes popular attractions, millions of twinkling lights, live entertainment and visits from your favorite holiday characters. There’s truly something for everyone in the family to enjoy but if you have little ones, it’s particularly magical. Recently, Travel + Leisure acknowledged that Stone Mountain Park is the official satellite office for Santa! This year, your kids can still bring their Christmas wishes to the big man himself, live and in person, at his North Pole office! Your kids can enjoy a chat with Santa from a safe distance while getting a special peek at his office.
Daily capacity will be limited, so we recommend that you purchase tickets in advance.
Your family is sure to discover a world of wow at Fernbank this holiday season. Their Winter Wonderland event is a holiday-inspired exhibit featuring trees and other displays decorated by local cultural partners that recognize celebrations including Christmas and Hanukkah, as well as traditions and practices like indigenous art and national symbols. Winter Wonderland also features iconic winter themes in giant “snow globe” scenes located outdoors.
Tucker Brewing Company, the Southeast’s largest outdoor beer garden, is family-friendly (and dog-friendly). Not just a great brewery, TBC also has a kitchen that serves up delicious food for the grown ups, (such as braised short rib and chickpea schnitzel) but also has kid-friendly options such as grilled cheese and fish & chips. Now through December 13th, don’t miss the first annual Winterfest which will feature a weekend Holiday Market with local vendors, live music, pictures with Santa, cookie decorating as well as more festivities throughout the week.
Couples
Part of the Atlanta dining scene for over 30 years, 57th Fighter Group is a unique date spot not just because of the decor but because it sits beside the runways at Peachtree-DeKalb Airport, so you can watch planes takeoff and land while you dine. It’s the perfect spot to dream about your next vacation with someone special.
A new addition to Tucker’s Main Street, Hot Betty’s serves up a tasty all-day breakfast menu featuring items such as crunchy friend chicken on top of a fluffy Belgium waffle. On Fridays and Saturdays, Hot Betty’s stays open for dinner and the chef serves up an “anything goes” menu that is sure to please your palate (of course, you’re also still welcome to order from their all-day breakfast menu for dinner). Don’t forget to complement your dinner with one of their famous cocktails!
Fernbank After Dark is back with a variety of unique and physically distanced after-hours experiences for grown-ups, including outdoor explorations in WildWoods, museum exhibits, live music, full bars, tapas menus, and science demonstrations. When you walk into Vista Vibes, you’ll notice immediately that you’ve stepped into a cool atmosphere and upbeat vibe. Dine on delicious southern cuisine such as Carolina Trout, Southern Fried Chicken and Shrimp & Grits while enjoying the sounds of live music from your table. What’s amazing about Vista Vibes is that the space is really large (social distancing is not a problem) and yet it still feels really intimate.
Inspired by his international travels as well as having his restaurant, The Alden, situated near the international food corridor that is Buford Highway, Chef Jared Hucks prepares dishes that will have you planning your next visit before you leave. Check out this recent segment on Atlanta Eats.
Your Quaranteam
What makes this such a unique Brewery is that it’s actually two breweries under one roof. High Card opened in 2019 and when the owner of Blue Tarp was looking for new space in Tucker, the two business owners decided to share the space, which was a win-win for Tucker because it combined two great breweries together under one roof. This is the perfect after-work spot to meet up with friends or to relax and unwind after a nice dinner on Main Street. The space can be a little tricky to find if you’ve never been but it’s situated directly behind The Local No. 7 and Hot Betty’s on Main Street.
Foodies all over the country are drawn to the popular seven-mile stretch of Buford Highway in DeKalb that showcases international restaurants serving up authentic cuisine. Download the BuHi app and begin plotting your culinary crawl.
